Sometimes it feels like auto news is just rumors about this and rumors about that. It is on days like today that it finally feels nice to talk about something concrete. In this case, it is regarding a new engine that Chrysler has been working on which they have now revealed.

The rumor was that a new engine was being developed by the nickname of ‘Hellcat.’ It was supposed to be the answer to allow the SRT team get a more powerful engine capable of competing with rival supercars. Turns out that the rumor is in fact true. Chrysler announced that the new engine is a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine.

The new V-8 engine will be put to use in both the SRT Dodge Charger and Challenger. The two SRT Dodge vehicles just got a new look and update that was shown off at the 2014 New York Auto Show with rumors of all-new versions coming in 2018.

What about the name of ‘Hellcat?” According to Automobile mag, who also covered the reveal of the new engine, the future of the Hellcat is still in flux. The spy photos of a Challenger with a hood scoop is not been designated Hellcat yet. He says that the name has been assigned to yet so there might still be a Hellcat surprise down the road.

SRT is always looking for, and finding, news ways to spruce up the SRT Viper. It’s clear that one thing the engineers like to do is be constantly and consistently poking at the machine to see what new boosts they can put into it. The most recent upgrade was shown off to the world at the New York International Auto Show. SRT is combining the Viper Anodized Carbon Special Edition Package with the new Time Attack Group road-racing spec-package.

The SRT Viper Anodized Carbon Edition will be produced in a small and limited run. Only 50 will be produced and only 10 of that bunch will carry the new Time Attack Group package. A numbered plague on the dash will identify just which model the Viper is.

The new SRT Viper has a carbon fiber rear deck lid spoiler with a two-piece front corner splitter to provide more weight for more down force. Also included in the package is the two-mode Bilstein dampers used to optimize on track performance.

The inside is as classy as the outside is fierce. The interior is draped in Alcantara and orange stitching. The knee blockers are wrapped in Alcantara while the vent accents are in orange and the trim in carbon-fiber to accent the interior.

“We’ve received an overwhelming response to the unique Metallic Matte exterior color since first showing the Anodized Carbon Special Edition Viper late last year,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – SRT Brand and Motorsports. “So we’re adding even more exclusivity with 10 distinctive SRT Vipers that combine our special exterior color with the new Time Attack Group of performance parts to offer our customers mind-boggling limits on their favorite road courses.”

SRT Dodge Challenger Hellcat Rumored to Debut This Weekend?

Rumors can be a tenacious thing, even more when the rumor is something car enthusiast want to happen. Take the Hellcat Hemi rumor. There was previous speculation as to what SRT would be doing for their next generation Dodge Challenger. The belief is that it will have the new Hellcat Hemi and thus would be the SRT Dodge Challenger Hellcat. While nothing offical has been said either way, recent developments have brought the Hellcat rumor talk back.

Torque News thinks that Chrysler and SRT may have a surprise up their sleeve for the upcoming 2014 Spring Festival of LXs in California. The festival is a place where drivers of a Charger, 300, Dodge Magnum, or the Challenger get together and meet. Chrysler has not specifically said there will not be a major announcement made.

No news is, well, no news in this case. However, that level of silence for a major event could mean something. This is the right crowd for the SRT team to stand-up in front of to marvel at their latest creation. There would be no better place to get the momentum started for a new generation of Challenger.

As with all rumors, though, take this one with a grain of salt, something Torque News is quick to point out. This very rumor was happening around the time of the 2014 North American International Auto Show and, obviously, it was not true. Still, you never know.
Will we see the new SRT Dodge Challenger Hellcat? Only patience will tell.
