New Forged Wheels Bring Greater Performance to SRT Vehicles

Speed is what people associate with SRT. Their vehicles are meant to produce the kinds of speed that cause a cartoonish reaction of a face melting. It comes as no surprise then that the engineers at SRT are finding new ways to accomplish the goal of making highers speeds possible. That is why SRT is introducing a new light weight high performance tire for their supercars.

The method of accomplishing this is by switching to forged wheels. These wheels are lighter in weight and are capable of greater performance. “A forged wheel is usually viewed as being a higher quality wheel,” said Illeana Dragnea, SRT Chassis Supervisor. “Forged wheels are seen as more of a performance wheel and for being stronger. On top of that, everybody knows they are significantly lighter.”

What is the difference between these two kinds of wheels? It is in how each is made. While both a forged wheel and a cast wheel are constructed by aluminum, forged wheels have a different method. They are made under higher pressures whilst the cast wheel is molded by putting melted aluminum in a mold. This makes the forged wheel denser in comparison.

This lighter wheel frees up the engineers with less weight to worry about. When it comes to getting the most speed out of any of the SRT vehicles, every pound shed is a win for performance.

SRT Viper vs the Chevy Corvette Stingray!

2014-SRT-Viper-TA-front-three-quarters-in-motion-3

SRT represents the power enthusiasts in the drivers market. That is clear by looking at their catalog of the powerful machines they churn out including the Viper. The rebirth of an old favorite, the Viper is the antithesis of what drivers look for in rugged power. It’s a vehicle that many a driver had a series of complaints about but put them all aside when considering the sheer joy of being behind the wheel of such a monstrous car. The SRT Viper isn’t the only major player in high power speed, so is the Chevy Corvette Stingray and The Car Connection decided to make a comparison.

It’s a fairly even head-to-head with each vehicle taking a win where the other falls behind. The Viper boosts much more horsepower, 640 hp to be precise, versus the Stingray’s 455 hp. However, that does cause the price of the Viper to be greater than that of the Stingray’s.

Another aspect they look at is that the SRT Viper, especially the latest TA breed, is designed more for track performance than for a leisurely drive to work. That doesn’t mean that SRT didn’t make the new Viper more accommodating for the every-day consumer that doesn’t spend a weekend on a track. The interior cockpit for the driver is much more friendly with quality materials put into the design. Even with all that, its clear that the Viper is still about displaying that power and no amount of comfort can hold back feeling that tremendous power.

The article goes into much more detail but makes it clear that the Stingray is more for drivers looking for a super car with more refined ride but the Viper is for the person who doesn’t want to hide their SRT power.

SRT Still Tweaking the Viper TA

2014-SRT-Viper-TA-front-three-quarters-in-motion-3The team up at SRT are not fooling around with the new SRT Viper TA. First shown at the New York Auto Show, since then the engineers have been working the Viper hard around the track. They’ve put a lot of work into making sure that it can keep improving in speed times.

To explain what they’ve done to enhance the performance in the TA since it was unveiled, SRT put out a video showing it speed around the race track. Watching it makes it quite clear they are out to prove that the SRT name has a high standard of quality to meet.

Many new features have been implemented to push the Viper TA. One example is mentioned by Motor Authority as the “addition of a carbon fiber rear spoiler and a two-piece front splitter.” This allows for the Viper to have an increase of 280 pounds in downforce.

Speed demons would do well to give the video a watch. A lot of work going into a car that’s only going to have 33 models made.
