SRT Viper Cares the Most About Raw Speed and Power

Ezra Dyer wrote an article for the New York Times about the SRT Viper where he begins with an interesting tale of a race. It was a 5.2 mile up-hill road race where the winner was in a Chevorlet Corvette ZR1. But the twist on this story is that while the Vette won the race, it didn’t have the fastest time. That symbolic victory belong to the Viper ACR which the organizers of the race didn’t include due to a technicality with the tires. Nevertheless, it was the Viper that was the fastest out of all the cars that day.

The reason Ezra recounted this story is due to him being given the chance to take the new 2013 SRT Viper GTS for a spin. His impression from the new supercar is that the engineers at SRT are trying for one thing, speed. The Viper wants to set the fastest record.

It’s certainly getting close. The SRT Viper is the second-fastest production car to ever to race at the Nürburgring track. The only thing between the Viper and that much desired number one spot is a Porsche; one that costs $845,000 to have.

We’ve recounted before in this blog about the Viper’s power. Mr Dyer noted the same thing, that the cost of power is the need to be careful around the beast. For starters, the Viper is only available in manual, there is no automatic option. When it comes time to shift, Dyer warns to not touch the metal or else you’ll be leaving with a nasty burn. This same burning sensation is also applied to when stepping out a Viper as the exhaust is located underneath below the door. So be warned when driving with shorts on. “I imagine that the Viper Club of America includes a lot of guys with missing patches of leg hair on their calves.”

It’s an entertaining piece overall and really gives the impression of how the Viper strives for power. It understands that it is a super car and isn’t trying to be anything but. While it might never reach the point where it’s widely seen on every road and in every parking lot, that’s okay for the folks behind the Viper. They don’t want to wind up like the Corvette. “The difference between the Corvette and the Viper is that the ’Vette wants to be a new Ferrari, while the Viper wants to be a 1965 Shelby Cobra. Either that, or a big rock on a catapult. It hasn’t decided.”

SRT Viper vs the Chevy Corvette Stingray!

SRT represents the power enthusiasts in the drivers market. That is clear by looking at their catalog of the powerful machines they churn out including the Viper. The rebirth of an old favorite, the Viper is the antithesis of what drivers look for in rugged power. It’s a vehicle that many a driver had a series of complaints about but put them all aside when considering the sheer joy of being behind the wheel of such a monstrous car. The SRT Viper isn’t the only major player in high power speed, so is the Chevy Corvette Stingray and The Car Connection decided to make a comparison.

It’s a fairly even head-to-head with each vehicle taking a win where the other falls behind. The Viper boosts much more horsepower, 640 hp to be precise, versus the Stingray’s 455 hp. However, that does cause the price of the Viper to be greater than that of the Stingray’s.

Another aspect they look at is that the SRT Viper, especially the latest TA breed, is designed more for track performance than for a leisurely drive to work. That doesn’t mean that SRT didn’t make the new Viper more accommodating for the every-day consumer that doesn’t spend a weekend on a track. The interior cockpit for the driver is much more friendly with quality materials put into the design. Even with all that, its clear that the Viper is still about displaying that power and no amount of comfort can hold back feeling that tremendous power.

The article goes into much more detail but makes it clear that the Stingray is more for drivers looking for a super car with more refined ride but the Viper is for the person who doesn’t want to hide their SRT power.

SRT Viper: Too Powerful for Motor Trend?

Motor Trend has got the President of SRT Ralph Giles mad. Angry enough to call them out on twitter concerning their fear of the Viper.

Jalopnik is covering a minor feud that erupted over Motor Trend’s comparison driver between the SRT Viper and the Corvette ZR1. In the end, the magazine gave the win to the Corvette which Giles took to twitter to voice his opinion. He doesn’t feel that the car failed to win, but the person behind the wheel.

The first tweet reads, “There’s is a lot more left in the car, Randy has always struggled with the Viper.” Jalopnik seems to take the middle ground, seeing the perspective of both parties involved. They admire Randy Probst’s skills of driving, but at the same time feel that Gile’s is correct in calling them out for not unleashing the maximum potential of the Viper. In the past, Motor Trend has labeled the Viper as scary and hard to handle.

It’s a question of if that is what drivers want in the Viper, raw power that is scary to even handle. When you sit behind the wheel of one, it’s hard to deny here’s an allure that the SRT has always had to it, and drivers are certainly expecting and wanting that when they drive a Viper.
