Check Out FCA’s Ralph Gilles Race a Viper ACR Around the Track for Labor Day Weekend

Oh to be the head of a car company so that I could spend my weekends “test driving” the hottest and fastest cars.  That’d be a nice way to live.

That’s just what Ralph Gilles, Fiat-Chrysler’s Head Designer, gets to do.  Auto Evolution hosted a look at how he spent his Labor Day weekend.  He took off from the office and headed to the Pittsburgh International Race Complex to take the Dodge Viper ACR for a few trips around the track.

The videos of the event are a blast.  It’s entertaining to see someone who clearly loves the place he works for and the products they make enjoy them in a way so few get to.  He races his ACR against another one.  Check out the videos and try not to want a career change afterwards.

Limited Edition Dodge Vipers Sell Out in Just 40 Minutes!

It’s a bittersweet year for Viper fans.  The Viper is going on ice for a while, but there is also the release of a new limited edition of Vipers for this year.  It begs the question; is the Viper still popular.  The answer to that question is a resounding yes if the amount of time it took for the limited edition Vipers to sell out is taken into account.  All it took was 40 minutes.

Dodge recently announced that it was releasing a very limited run of special edition Vipers to celebrate its final year in production before it goes back on the shelf.  While fans were certainly saddened by the news of the Viper going away again, they made their devotion heard loud and clear.  In just 40 minutes, the limited edition Vipers sold out.

That’s 28 Vipers gone in less than an hour.  For those that missed the window, Dodge has the Viper Snakeskin ACR pre-orders starting in mid-July and will have 31 units available.

Turns Out the Viper ACR Set a Track Record!

In the world of Dodge and SRT, the conversation is centered around the Hellcats.  Can’t say I blame anyone, the love of something that fast and that powerful shouldn’t be something that goes away easily.  What isn’t being talked about is the Viper.  The Viper is going through a bit of a rough patch, but for fans of it, Road and Track features an article on the Viper ACR that should show there is still plenty to love about the supercar.

It turns out that Dodge is keeping mum on something pretty impressive about the ACR.  The writer for Road and Track found out about it at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.  Turns out that the Viper ACR has set a track record.  The previous record was held by the Porsche 918 Spyder, “a car seven times the Viper’s price.”

That’s insane to hear, and if you’re like the writer, it’s boggling to understand why Dodge is sitting on this.  Surely having the ability to advertise fastest lap for the Viper would be a major selling point to the buyers.  The team behind the Viper even had the ACR run the track twice and manage to set the record twice in a row.  So why the secrecy?

Turns out it is to make sure no one else can claim the record.  As the writer says, it’s to avoid having a hybrid hypercar beat the time.  Even if they do beat it, now they have to do it twice to really trounce the Viper ACR’s time.
