The Future of the Viper is Uncertain

Future Uncertain for Dodge Viper

One of the biggest news stories for Chrysler in the past few weeks has been the continuing negotiations with the UAW.  Car and Driver did some digging through the contract that is being proposed by Fiat-Chrysler and the United Auto Workers and may have found some troubling news for fans of the Dodge Viper.

What Car and Driver discovered in the contracts is that the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, which is where the Viper is currently being built, has not product build for 2017 and no future product planned.  That means that Dodge may be shelving the Viper again and it may be sometime before we see it again.

The Dodge Viper has been having a hard time finding itself since being brought back.  While initial sales were not the best, it did improve when Dodge put in a price drop.  The biggest problem with the momentum of the Viper is that other supercars are stealing its thunder.  It’s hard to look past the Hellcats when talking about performance and while Viper has been boasting about the capability of the ACR, it does seem to be a tad short.

It may be time to think about where the Viper is supposed to be now that it is back in the Dodge family.  The Hellcats are pushing the performance, so what is it that the Viper has to offer besides a cool look and nostalgia?

There is no confirmation on if this news is legit and it could change before the finalization of the agreement.  Maybe there is hope for the Viper yet.

SRT Viper Named “Collectible Car of the Future” by NAHC

SRT Viper

Last month, the SRT Viper was honored by the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC) as a “Collectible Car of the Future,” the third time the Viper has received this award.

The SRT Viper beat out 19 other vehicles from 2013 to receive the award. NAHC members voted on the vehicles based on perceived longevity, specifically which vehicle will receive more attention at the Woodward Dream Cruise in 25 years. The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event where car enthusiast take their classic cars for a cruise along Woodward Avenue through eight different host communities in Southeast Michigan. Additionally, there is live music, events for the kids, exhibitions, and more. In short, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the ultimate destination for classic cars, making it the perfect judge of a vehicle’s popularity and longevity.

Ralph Gilles, the President and CEO of SRT Brand and Motorsports, received the award from the President of the NAHC Board of Trustees at a recent ceremony. In response to the award, Gilles is quoted, “With fewer than 30,000 Vipers built since the nameplate’s launch in 1992, the Viper has earned its place as a unique, hand-built American exotic supercar. The National Automotive History Collection further recognizes the exclusivity and collectability of our flagship performance machine from Chrysler Group.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 Makes Real-Life Banshee for Contest

Bravado-Banshee.jpg&MaxW=630September is a big month for gaming.  After a long wait, the infamous and popular series Grand Theft Auto gets a brand new entry to the franchise and it’s sure to be a hit.  The game series has always used fictional recreations of various vehicles for use in the game.  Car enthusiasts have always been able to spy little give-aways that pointed to what car was used as the basis of the model.  One of the most popular of which is the Banshee.  In car, it’s always been one of the fastest cars to get around in.  Anyone who took a look knew from the curves just what car was used to make it, the Viper.

With the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 on the horizon, Rockstar Games- the game developers- have put together a real-life version of the popular Banshee to give away to a lucky gamer.  They’re teaming up with Gamestop to make it happen and you can enter and see the full details here.

It was clear how much the Banshee looks like a modded Viper in-game, but when see it in real life, it’s even clearer.  While the company hasn’t expressly said what was used to make the real Banshee, it’s so obvious that it doesn’t even really need to be mentioned.  What other car would they want to use to make the fastest in-game car come to life?
